"Romeo and Juliet" Ballet In Mariinsky Theatre

This Thursday we had a chance to watch "Romeo and Juliet", a ballet which opened the 13th International Ballet Festival in Mariinsky theatre. Juliet was played by one of the most famous Russian ballet dancers, Diana Vishneva. Romeo was played by Vladimir Shklyarov who is the principal dancer of Mariinsky ballet. Valery Gergiev (the general and the artistic director or Mariinsky theatre, as well as the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra), was the conductor for the big night.

Four hours fly by when you are surronded by the splendid interiors of the theatre. Magnificent music written by Sergei Prokofiev, thought-out but not overwhelming scenery, wonderful costumes which beautifully illustrated the epoch described by William Shakespeare - these all made the experience unforgettable.

Diana Vishneva's Juliet was graceful, impetuous, delicate and faithful. Vladimir Shklyarov portrayed Romeo as sensitive, passionate and noble young man. Alexander Sergeyev who played Mercutio should also be mentioned; for me he's the perfect Mercutio.

Every time we visit Mariinsky theatre we leave the building having no words to describe how delighted we are with the show. This is why I advise you to grab some tickets and watch ballet or opera in a theatre. Trust me, it's wonderful to be fascinated by the beauty of classical music, to be charmed by the dance or the voice, to be deceived - by the illusory ease of the artists' work.

    1. Thank you very much, Isa!
The shot of the chandelier is probably my favourite one! As for the shot of the balconies, I wanted to channel exactly this "infinity feeling" :)

    1. Natasha, you definitely should go! It's so worth it!
But there's one thing: I'm from St. Petersburg and this post is about Mariinsky Theatre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariinsky_Theatre), not about the Bolshoi Theatre which is located in Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolshoi_Theatre).

      Have a great weekend! :)
